HORNSEA CRICKET CLUB

The season has drawn to a close, here’s a resume of the past month’s matches.   SATURDAY 27th AUGUST Harrogate 279-8 v Hornsea 1st xi 27-2 off 5.5 overs Hornsea were at home to a young but talented Harrogate team, likely to finish 3rd in the table. After a glorious morning, lunchtime rain delayed the start by an hour & the overs were reduced to 40 per side.   After losing a wicket in the thirties, Harrogate progressed serenely to 87-1 before a needless run out gifted the wicket of Ellaby, a centurion against Hornsea earlier in the season. However captain G Owram progressed nicely to 84 and A Griffin contributed a hard hitting 69 before some late order hitting produced a sizeable total considering the reduced overs played.   Tom Catley tried to retain control for the bowlers taking 2 wickets with left arm spin in his best spell of the season. However, the Hornsea fielding was woeful at times and must be improved.   The 2nd innings was delayed by rain during which Hornsea lost further overs in their reply. Upon resumption only 4 overs were played before the Hornsea openers were back in the changing rooms watching it rain again.   A further 20 minute rain delay ensued before the Hornsea openers were taken out in the gloom, both being dismissed within 10 deliveries, the 2nd wicket prompting the umpires to deem the conditions unplayable and the match was abandoned. Congratulations to Harrogate on the sporting manner in which they accepted conditions were no longer equal for both team & willingly shook hands on a draw in a match in which they had dominated.   Sutton v Hornsea 2nd xi – won, match conceded Sadly the hosts were unable to raise a team for the final league game of the season, citing Hull FC & Hull City commitments as the main reasons. A disappointing end to the league season, but at least it is full league points gratefully accepted.     SATURDAY 3rd SEPTEMBER Hornsea 1st xi v Beverley – match abandoned The final home fixture of the season was abandoned an hour after the scheduled start time due to the rain which remained constant from 11am throughout the remainder of the day.   SATURDAY 10th SEPTEMBER   Selby 216-6 v Hornsea 1st xi 183-7 Due to rugby commitments at the Selby ground the final league fixture of the season was switched to the picturesque Queen Margaret’s School at Escrick. Selby won the toss and chose to bat despite a slow outfield from the overnight rain. The Hornsea bowling was steady if not penetrating on a slow surface with younger element J Marson (on debut) and T Catley leading the way. A much better fielding display on the wide open spaces, although the total was boosted by 31 extras, the majority of which were wides something that requires improvement. M Hoyle 58 led the way with the bat but all batsmen reached double figures in a slightly above par score for the conditions.   Tight early bowling restricted the normally positive opening pair but they contributed 33 before the first wicket fell. The top 5 batsmen all achieved double figures before being dismissed and with the score 84-5 it looked like a defeat was the most likely outcome. It was left to skipper M Battye 46 and R Medforth 40* to step up to the mark as they put on 79 for the sixth wicket to ensure a decent final score was achieved, picking up batting points & draw points along the way.   The 12 points gained combined with the abandoned fixture at Patrington resulted in Hornsea retaining their position in Division 1 for next season.     FINAL LEAGUE TABLES Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League Division 1
