First game of the season – Hornsea Town 4 Howden 2 Town got their HPL1 campaign underway with a victory over AFC Howden, convincing in score line if not in performance as the lads took their time to really get going but take the 3 points nonetheless. It wasn’t the start the Seasiders envisaged as after only 6 minutes of the game Howden took the lead. A long ball landed at the feet of the Howden striker who was able to loft the ball over an onrushing James Greensides to make the score 1-0 in the early stages. From there though, it was only really Hornsea who looked like winning the game as Morgan McKenzie soon equalised and Jordan Holmes added a second to make the scores 2-1 going into the break. Some strong words at half time based on the team’s performance made sure no such start was made to the second half as Town went on to notch a couple more through substitutes Mark Stathers who could have had more, and debutant Marc O’Hare. Howden did get a consolation goal through a penalty as the scores ended 4-2 at the final whistle. 3 points were the aim before the match and that’s just what the team take home. With much to build on in terms of performance ahead of two games in a week coming up, the lads will know they’ll need to continue to up their game if they’re to make a serious promotion push back to the Humber Premier League this term.
