Hornsea Golf Club Round Up from Stretton Wright

Over 77 Am Am Thursday 21st July saw us hold the 77+ Am Am. Yet again David Schofield had done a great job in getting all the teams and organising the event with this year 20 teams taking part, four more than last year. It was a hot old afternoon again with near perfect conditions for golf. With everyone bringing a prize for this event it means that everyone is a winner. Good job as my team came home nearly last!!! The winners  were  Lindsay Ward, Paul Duckworth, Derek Jones & Peter Blood with 94pts Gents Mail on Sunday Well it’s great news again for team Hornsea as under the guidance of Sam Middleton the team have another win and move on now to the 8th round. The latest win was over Saltburn Golf Club and saw Hornsea go through 4 – 1 with impressive wins for Andy Fox, Mark Cooke, Sam Middleton and Leigh Gawley. Our only player to lose was Nathan Wright. Saltburn had brought a very strong side so this really was a great win. Well played boys and good luck in the next round. Gents Scratch League  Well it has happened again to Hornsea. This time it’s the gents A team that play in the 1st Division Scratch League that have had a fantastic season and went into the last game away at Hull on Tuesday evening (which is always a tough game) needing 1.5 points to win the league. Unfortunately though the Hornsea team lost 4 – 0 to hand the title to Hull. Gutted for all the team is an understatement after such a great season. Well played to all that have represented the team and I’m sure next year the title will be ours. The B team which have also had a great year went into an away game at Boothferry needing a good win to lift the 3rd Division title. This time we were 1 point behind Boothferry so again a good result was required to overturn this. We had a strong team out and they all performed well. Unfortunately again though Hornsea came up .5 short after a 2-2 draw and like the A team have finished 2nd in the league after a great season. As mentioned by one of the members, at times we have had to rely on higher handicappers to make up the numbers. You should be proud to be asked to represent your club and should make every effort to play. Amazing after a full season .5 was the difference. Can I just thank Sam Middleton for all his hard work in organising both teams this year. It was a great effort and I know all the players and myself at the club appreciate what you do. Thanks Sam. Ladies Scratch team This month the Ladies Scratch Team travelled to Otley for their final league match. Confidence was high following the home win however in hot conditions and following the 36 hole scratch cup the day before Hornsea ladies went down 5 – 2. It has been a fantastic season for the Scratch Team ladies achieving the highest league position in recent years and gaining promotion into Division 1 of the Yorkshire Ladies league. This is a fantastic achievement as Hornsea have only ever been in the 1st Division twice before. The squad Angela Clappison, Rosie Atkin, Sharon Cane, Lyndis Johns, Nicky Salzl, Caroline Barker, Wendy Lockwood, Rosemary Turner, Myra Smith & Mags Gee. Congratulations to all the players. Onward and upwards!!! Really well done girls. Ladies A team  The “A” team unfortunately lost 4-3 to Sandmoor on Tuesday 26th July. However it was a valiant try with all 3 ladies at the rear having to give 6 shots and all losing on the 18th. It was so disappointing as we could have possibly made the finals had we won but there is always next year!!! I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to all the ladies who played for the “A” team and gave their best!! Mags Gee, Rosemary Turner, Myra Smith,Cath Caley, Sue Robinson, Sarah Stonier, Jean Prout, Jan Jackson, Wendy Lockwood, Judy Thornton, Nicky Salzl, Angela Clappison, Lyndis Johns, Barbara Teal and myself have been in the team. Chris Gregory “A” Team Captain Juniors away trip to Woodhall Spa  On Friday 29th July Paul took some of our juniors to Woodhall Spa for a morning of coaching followed by 18 holes on the Hotckin Course. What a great day they all had too. It is many years since I last did a similar trip and some of the lads that went on that trip still talk about it now. I guess our current juniors will do the same as it really is a day to remember. Juniors do well again Following that some of our juniors went to play in the Bridlington Junior Open. Yet again they came away with the team prize after they all performed really well. The team consisted of Albert Anderson, Harry Anderson, Will Marshall and Alfie Anderson. All of them also did well in the individual competition with the highlight been Alfie winning the under 12’s with a nett 66. This followed his success in Leeds at the Wee Wonders Tournament where he became one of only three regional qualifiers for the Wee Wonders Grand Final at St Andrews on 27th and 28th August. Filey Seniors over 50’s Two weeks ago Martin Rowbotham and Allan Scarlett won at Filey in a Seniors Open. I have been waiting for a report but all I’ve got is a picture. I guess they played well and had a good score!! GolfWell I must admit I am still a little lost for words after what happened here last Friday and so other than a couple of bits my newsletter this week is dedicated to the Hornsea 150. What Joe Palmer and Leigh Gawley achieved was truly amazing and it was just a fantastic day at the club all round. It was a year ago that they and Chris Wilson played 100 holes in a day and I thought that was crazy. Shortly after Joe and Leigh decided that they wanted another challenge for 2016. All sorts of ideas were talked about but in the end when they told me they were going to play “150 holes” in a day walking, I really did think they were crazy. No way could they do it. 8 rounds, all in roughly 2 hours, and then 6 more holes. Well as the months went by and a charity to support was picked I was quite surprised that they hadn’t really started doing any training at all. The date was getting ever closer and with about 2 months to go at last they started to get a few rounds under their belts by teeing off late some evenings and playing 36 holes in less than 4 hours. Now that was great until you start to work out that you need to keep up that pace for 8 rounds and 6 holes!! Could it be done? Surely not…….From 4pm onwards the patio was full which was fantastic too see. It was great to see the guys passing and the masses from the patio cheering them on. It was about 8.45pm when the final 18 holes were completed leaving just 6 holes to play to complete the challenge. Just about everyone on the patio then followed for the last 6 holes and both Joe and Leigh were definitely lifted and they both seemed to just bounce round those final 6 holes with ease with the encouragement of those following. I must say some great golf was played, with Joe nearly making a 2 on the 2nd and Leigh birding the 16th and 17th. That was Leighs 5th birdie on the 17th during the day!! It was a fantastic achievement and in the end up until now has raised just under £3,000 for the charity. Really well done boys, I should never have doubted you!!!! Thanks go to all the: caddies, Howard Palmer, Chris Wilson, Dave Hill, Paul Duckworth, Charlie Duckworth, Chris Fielder, Paul Lockwood Snr, Wendy Lockwood, Nicola Salzl, Craig Gawthorpe, Caroline Barker, Paul Gibson, Steve Prout, Jayne Gawley, Dave Peasgood, Nathan Wright, Carl Horth, Steve Uzzell, Richard Fell, Donna Fell and Jaz Fell. I also need to mention Dave Blanchard Jnr who came with his drone and took some amazing footage of them going round and also of the course. Follow this link to see the drone footage that Dave did. GENTS SUNDAY MAIL Last month our Hornsea team progressed through to the 7th round of the Sunday Mail competition after a great 3-2 win over Sandburn Hall. Wins for Nathan Wright, Gareth Williams and Sam Middleton did the business for Hornsea. Danny Norton and Andy Fox both played very well but came up against tough opposition. Good luck in the next round boys. Sunday 26th June – Invitation Day Sunday 26th June saw Hornsea hold its Gents Invitation Day. Despite emails and lots of encouragement only 31 pairs played. The weather was fantastic and all the comments about the condition of the course apart from one were very complimentary yet again. Those that ate also enjoyed a wonderful carvery. In the end two pairs came out on top with fantastic scores of 45pts. This 90% handicap rule really does improve the scoring!! In the end though, Mathew Boyes and his guest edged out Jim Jeffries and his guest on the last 9 CAPTAINS WEEKEND Well what a fantastic weekend for golf our Gent’s Captain Craig had. It was a little breezy on Saturday which I know a few of you found tough but at least the sun was shining and everyone stayed dry. On Sunday again conditions were good and whilst I spent all day on the 10th tee with Craig and the juniors at times when the sun came out it really was quite warm GENTS SCRATCH LEAGUE The great form of both the gent’s scratch teams continues under the guidance of Sam Middleton with both teams leading their divisions. Well done team Hornsea HORNSEA PRO AM Friday 15th July saw Hornsea hold its annual Pro Am with Professionals and teams coming from as far afield as London and Liverpool. The course as it has been all year was presented immaculately and all comments that came my way throughout the day and at the presentation were all excellent. Most found it tough but fair with good shots rewarded and bad shots punished. Nick Ludwell from Selby in the end won the Professional prize with a fantastic score of 67. Not bad considering he has a really bad back and conditions were really quite tough!! This score was good enough to win by 3 from Alex Belt with Chris Crowder, Chris Halley and local boy Rich Pace all one shot further afield. It was a team from Malton, Energytek that won the team prize with a great score of 128. Most important of all though was that even though my individual score was not great (played well for 16 holes!!) I managed to bring my team Luisiana Pacific home in 3rd place with 131. Well played Rees Brown, Martin Champs and our Club Captain Craig Gawthorpe. EAST RIDING JUNIOR MATCH Last Sunday Hornsea hosted the East Riding Junior Match against Harrogate and Huddersfield. Here is the match report. EAST RIDING V HALIFAX & HUDDERSFIELD UNDER 18’S AT HORNSEA GC, 10TH JULY 2016 Hornsea Golf Club was again in splendid condition for our fourth fixture of the season against Halifax & Huddersfield. This was the first time we had home advantage and the team were in a positive frame of mind going into the morning foursomes. Brendan Wright and Jack Maxey won 1 up, Lewis Hunt and Charlie Milner won 4&3, Tom Duck and Matty Atkinson won 4&2 and James Halford and Josh Raynor finished the foursomes with a fine 6&5 win. The score at lunch was 8-4. The first four matches were shared evenly with Matty Raybould winning 2&1 with five birdies and Tom Duckcoasting to a 5&4 win to go unbeaten on the day. More wins came thick and fast as we demolished the Hal’ & Hudds’ team with some great golf on a beautiful course. Brendan Wright 1up, James Halford 4&3, Lewis Huntand Jack Maxey both 7&6, Jude Tarbotton 3&2, Josh Raynor 4&3, and Matty Atkinson 6&4. The performance of the afternoon came from Charlie Milner who found himself 4 down after the front nine holes. We have been working as a team on being more positive and just focusing on the next shot and hole and not getting too focused on how bad or well things are going. Charlie managed to half the 10th hole after just missing a putt for birdie and with a new focus he started hitting great shots and put the pressure back on his opponent. He then won 5 out of the next 6 holes to get 1up with 2 holes to play. The rest, as they say, is history. Charlie showed his best qualities under adversity and showed the fighting spirit we will need going forward. This result will now put the East Riding joint top with Sheffield in the YIDU league after 4 matches, with 3 wins and 1 defeat. Juniors Represent East Riding On Sunday our East Riding Junior Team Champion side, Albert Anderson, Harry Anderson & Will Marshall travelled to Middleborough to play in the Yorkshire Team Championship. It was a great experience for the boys and I’m sure they will have all learnt a lot. Well done to Harry Anderson who with his 37pts was the 5th best score of the day. Big thanks must go to Paul Gibson for all his efforts not only on this day but also for all the time he spends helping with all the juniors. Sunday 17th July – Am Am Open Special!! What a great event this was. A shame more teams didn’t play but in the end we had 15 teams. All teams before they set off had to draw a Professional that was playing in The Open on Sunday and that score was then added to the team Am Am score. Some teams had great Pro’s and others not so good. I am sure you will all find it amusing to know we drew Kodia Ichihara and he shot 78 and finished in last place!! Not quite what our team was after!!! HULL & DISTRICT ASSOCIATION PAST CAPTAINS AM AM Last week Hornsea held the above event and this is a quick report that was sent to me. Winners of the Hull & District Past Captains Association Am Am played at Hornsea on Wednesday were the guests from the Sheffield Union Captains Association. In his speech at the presentation,Tony Price from Wath GC, asked to pass on his congratulations to Gareth Williams and his greens team for having the course in such immaculate condition. He added that the Sheffield Captains always look forward to playing at Hornsea, “not only because it is nice to play a course with no hills, but also as it is an excellent challenge of golf on great surfaces.”   The Hornsea team of Brian Kirton, Mike Brooke, Tony Barron and Norman Broxham came eighth in the prizes with 87 points.
