Highlights from Hornsea School’s latest Newsletter

The summer exam results were again great cause for celebrations. Both individually and collectively students performed fantastically at both GCSE and A level resulting in our school receiving a 5 star rating, one of only 5 schools across Hull and the East Riding. Our new Positive Discipline system has started to make a real difference to the cul-ture within our school. The majority of our students are being rewarded more regularly and will soon be able to ‘cash’ the rewards for something of their choosing. A small handful of students have experienced the other side of the system but this is enabling us to remove any low level disruption and allow the staff to teach more effectively. The uniform is now being worn much better and the students look really smart. Congratulations to all our A Level students who achieved some fantastic results this summer. We had a 99% pass rate overall with and incredible 35% of students achieving A*-A grades. Once again there has been some out-standing individual performances that has enabled students to successfully gain places at their chosen universities. A number of students also “upgraded” their course / universities choices based upon their results. We are delighted for our outgoing year 13 and wish them all every success in the future whether that be at University, Apprenticeships, continuing education or in employment. Furthermore, A Level Results success has put HSLC 6th Form in the top 15% of all Sixth Form Centres and Colleges nationally and we are placed 1st within the East Riding for our academic results and in 3rd place overall. Having just welcomed our new year 12 into 6th form we have one eye on the future with our Prospective 6th form evening on the horizon. Wednesday 8th November is a date for your diary, when we welcome year 11 to look at what is on offer post GCSE`s. With the changes to A level examinations it is ever more important for students to maximise their performance at GCSE to aid any future university applications. We were thrilled when former HSLC student and professional footballer Brandon Fleming, came into school recently.Brandon made his first team debut against Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup on the 22nd August. He was given the squad number of 33 which he will keep throughout the 2017-18 season. He put on a great display in front of 7139 spectators. After the game Brandon got in touch with Mr Dexter from HSLC and said he would like to donate his first ever professional shirt to Hornsea School as he enjoyed his time at Hornsea School so much.Brandon has a contract with Hull City up until 2019 and is sure to have a very bright future ahead of him as a professional footballer. Hornsea School are very grateful for this and would like to thank him once again for this very thoughtful gesture and they will be displaying this shirt for all pupils and visitors to see. Students in HSLC have been very busy supporting a variety of charities over the last few months. Towards the end of the summer term over £600 was raised in support of Maisie’s Challenge. A non-uniform day, Year 7 enterprise activities and a 6th Form activities day all helped towards this local appeal to help 9 year old Maisie and a long awaited life changing operation that aims to give her mobility in her legs.
