Hornsea Carnival 21st-23rd July 2017 – ‘A Celebration of Culture’

This year’s carnival kicks off in Hall Garth Park on Friday 21st July with a fantastic fireworks display started by Hornsea’s Mayor and our Carnival Royals.   This year’s Carnival Queen is 22 year old local business owner Poppy Anderson.  Poppy runs The Men’s Room Barbers Shop in Hornsea with her brother Lewis.  She loves being part of the community and taking care of the grooming of the guys in Hornsea.  In her spare time Poppy enjoys spending time with her boyfriend Josh, socialising in and around Hornsea and walking her beautiful German Shepard ‘Shelby’ on the beach. Poppy will be joined by Carnival Princess Maisie Rice.  9 year old Maisie is looking forward to being part of this year’s carnival and thinks it will be a lot of fun!  She is fast becoming a bit of a local celeb through the fundraising efforts of Maisie’s Challenge.  With the help of Hornsea locals and business Maisie is well on the way to raising enough money for her life changing operation.  Our Carnival Queen and Princess will this year be escorted by two Princes – Alfie Rice aged 9 and Joe Jenney aged 10.  Alfie is Maisie’s twin brother and is looking forward to supporting his sister and having fun along the way.  Joe loves carnival and attends every year.  When not at a school Joe enjoys theme parks and spending time with friends.  His slogan is always ‘be cheerful and have a good day’.  We wish all our royals a fun packed carnival, look out for them in the parade and give them a wave as they pass by!   With the theme of A Celebration of Culture we are hoping this year’s parade will reflect the diverse nature of our town, county and country’s culture.  All are welcome an parade entry forms are still available on our website.   Our live music nights return to Hall Park with 8 Acts performing over 2 nights.  Tickets for these nights are on sale now from Stackhouse Bar and The Townhouse on Newbegin (See poster for more details).  As in previous years the outdoor music stage will be providing live music in the park over both days with a variety of acts to suit all tastes.   The Carnival Arena sees the return of the Welsh Axe Men, Eagle Eye Falconry and Flyin Ryan (Motorcycle stunt team) plus H&M Dog display team and a circus workshop.  Craft and food tents will be full of local gifts and produce for you to browse and purchase, look out for our live food demos on Carnival Sunday too!   As part of the Hornsea Carnival Celebration of Culture 2017 we will be hosting Artists in Residence.  A wide range of local artists will be holding workshops and demonstrations as well as exhibiting some of their work.  During the weekend the artists will explore the Carnival and create work that captures and reflects their experiences.  So look out for them in the park as they create new and exciting work throughout the weekend.  We plan to exhibit the work created later in the year.   Sunday morning sees the 1st Carnival Fun Run taking place in association with Hornsea Harriers, entry is free for this fun 1K run round the park.  Open to all ages and abilities why not pop along for a run, jog or stroll around the park?  Fancy dress more than welcome!  Hornsea’s Churches together will be holding a Sunday morning service in the Carnival Arena and all are welcome to attend.  With the addition of the fairground, many local traders and charity stalls it will be a fun packed weekend for all.   A full list of events and lots more information is available in our carnival programme which will be available to buy from 1st July from various retail outlets in Hornsea, look out for the poster or contact any carnival member.  We really hope you enjoy this year’s event and we look forward to seeing all the community at Carnival.   The Hornsea Carnival Committee is a small group of volunteers who, along with the many friends of Carnival, put on the annual 3-day event in Hornsea’s Hall Garth Park.  We plan and fundraise all year round to put on the biggest free carnival on the East Yorkshire coast.  So please give generously when you see any of our collection buckets and support your Community Carnival.   Keep up to date with all the Carnival news on our website www.hornseacarnival.org or follow us on Facebook Carnival, Community, Culture Carnival Committee From left to right  Top row: Ruth Skinner, Dennis Mapplebeck, Fred Skinner, Mike Hill Bottom row: Allan Iles, Chris Priestnall, Helen Hill Carnival members not present for the pic: Ruth Ward, Mike Ward, Colin Embleton, Andrew Hill, Heather Embleton, Anna Carr, Mike Wright, Neil Barker, Claire Barker
