National Champ – Bowls news

Simon Wright added another title to his name at the beginning of July when he joined Helen Wood of York IBC and Kevin Vernon of Devon to win the Disability Bowls Plant Welding National Triples Championship at Gedling IBC. The Terrific Triple were undefeated in their round robin matches to get into the final which proved to be a very close match with them just pulling ahead in the last two ends. Hornsea’s other competitor, Irene Cheer gained a credible 4th. The Friendliest of Friendly Matches: Hornsea Novices vs New Earswick Novices A chance meeting at the Scarborough Open lead to a very special friendly game being held on Sunday, 9th July. A team of newer players from New Earswick challenged a mixed (novices and one or two more experienced players) to a five rink triples game followed by Sunday lunch. The challengers put up a brave fight, winning two rinks but were just pipped by the Hornsea team who won three rinks, with a result of 61-43 to the home team. Fortified by a hearty lunch, the challengers headed out to explore our fair town and beach but not before declaring this to be the “best and friendliest friendly” they had ever played. A great experience for all concerned. Well done to the Hornsea team, especially those playing their first ever inter-club game and, in some cases, their first ever formal game! We look forward to welcoming the New Earswick novices again this autumn. In the meantime, the club welcomes members and visitors alike to have a roll up and/or a coffee, bar drink or lunch (booking advisable for playing and Sunday lunches). With August fast approaching the Club is getting ready for the start of the 2017-18 season which gets underway on Monday, 11th September. At the present time league lists are up on the Club’s board for players to confirm which leagues they will be playing in. Prior to the start of the season this year there will be two club registration days for players to come along and sign up for the coming season. These are Friday, 8th September and Saturday, 9th September. The rescheduled Rod Steward concert took place on Saturday, 15th July and was enjoyed by those who attended. The Club members are looking forward to the next event which is on Saturday, 19th August. This summer spectacular is ‘Ian Trout as Neil Diamond’. Tickets are £9 which includes supper and these are now on sale from the Club on 01964 537776. The summer doubles/triples league in which the Club has two teams, is still continuing. Both teams are doing OK with the latest match on Tuesday, 18th July at Doncaster, – narrowly won by the home team 4 points to 2. Both teams won a rink but Doncaster won by a narrow 7 point aggregate score.
