Cricket- Promotion and End of Season Report

1st Team The 1st team have continued their excellent form over the 2nd half of the season and clinched promotion to Division 1 for 2016. This is great incentive for the team to continue improving next season. 12th September – Tadcaster 113 off 32 overs, Hornsea 115-4 off 21 overs With promotion already guaranteed, it was decided to hold a bus road trip with 24 players and ‘groupies’ making the journey (plus a further half dozen travelling under their own steam). Joe Butterworth and Hornsea skipper Doug Griebenouw were the pick of the bowlers. These two ripped through the home side’s batting as Tadcaster capitulated, losing 9 wickets for a mere 21 runs. Griebenouw finishing with 3-2 and Butterworth starring with 5-25 off 10 overs. The second innings started with the second ball dismissal of Mark Battye. Paul Clappison went on to make 24 and end the season as the team’s top scorer with 650+ runs. The ever reliable Rich Medforth came to the wicket at 44-3 and made batting look easy as he stroked his way to a rapid 38 with seven x 4s and one x 6 before he was dismissed with only ten runs required.George Butterworth with 11*, including shot of the day, and Doug 10* saw Hornsea home, Doug’s winning runs being a 6 landing 30 yards back on the adjoining bowling green, a fitting way of summing up the positive approach displayed by the team all season. An enjoyable day out to round off a fine season summed up by some emotional words from the skipper, bringing a tear to the eye of the most experienced of players.Other recent results: 5th September – winning draw versus Welton & Brough 31st August – match abandoned versus Woodhouse Grange 29th August – winning draw versus Driffield 2nd Team The 2nd team continue to improve and can expect to start 2016 in a positive frame of mind with a much improved squad of players generated throughout this season. 12th September – Hull Ionians 277-3 45 overs, Hornsea 192-7 45 overs The second team completed their fixtures at home against a team in the top half of the division. The second team achieved their biggest score of the season in this game and managed to finish off the bottom of the table, a considerable achievement in itself given the difficulties experienced fielding competitive sides over the first 2 months of the season. Well done to all that have helped bring around this improvement. Other recent results: 5th September – win versus North Dalton by 1 wicket 31st August – match abandoned versus Humbleton 29th August – lost to Driffield by 67 runs With the 2015 season wound up it was a time to reflect on the season at the League’s Annual Dinner.   League Dinner   Friday 16th October was the date for the York & District Senior League’s annual dinner, held at York Racecourse. Guest speaker this year being former West Indies opening batsman Gordon Greenidge who in his illustrious career amassed 7,558 runs from 108 Test Matches playing at a time when The Islanders were undoubtedly the best team in the world.   After a fine speech, Gordon was fortunate enough to have the privilege of presenting the runners-up trophy in Division 2 South to Vice Captain Paul Clappison who I’m sure would have talked him through his many calypso innings this season. Promotion was a fine achievement after a poor start to the season and hopefully suggests a promising 2016 in Division 1.   This Divisional trophy was surpassed on a personal level by Terry Clappison who was awarded the Best Groundsman of the Year. This is a deserved honour for Terry and reflects positively on the club as a whole to pick up this trophy, chosen from the 56 clubs in the league many of whom have professional ground staff – well done!   Club Golf Day   On Saturday 17th October, the cricket club held its inaugural golf event, an individual stableford competition hosted by Hornsea Golf Club on the windiest day of Autumn so far. Overall winner was Jonathan Bickerdyke with a sparkling round accumulating 42 points, but the value of straight hitting was demonstrated by Angela Clappison who won nearest the pin on two holes. A successful event, enjoyed by all and it is hoped that it can be built upon for next year.   In his presentation speech, organiser David Prescott expressed the Club’s thanks to Hornsea Golf Club for hosting the event, all players whether golf members or not, plus prize sponsors Wilkin Chapman Solicitors, Vintage Fountain Pens (Mark Catley) and Mark Jordan Landscaping.   Club AGM – Monday 9th November at Hollis Recreation Ground, 8.00pm start prompt.   A vital opportunity for all members, or future members to have an opportunity to air their views on the future direction of the club, playing wise and social.
