HORNSEA ART SOCIETY TOP TEN IN THE U.K.

Back in April, Hornsea Art Society held a competition amongst members to find five paintings to represent the society in a U.K. wide Art Club of the Year competition, organised by “The Artist” and “Leisure Painter” magazines. We recently heard that we had been successful in progressing to the final ten clubs in the U.K. and our entries will be displayed at the prestigious Patchings Festival in Calverton near Nottingham in July. This is a great achievement for the society and fingers crossed that we might even get in to the top three when final judging takes place. Either way, this is a great achievement for the society and the town as a whole. The successful artists were Anne Saunders, Kate Gendle, Keith Robinson, Pam Williams and  Meg Burkill so well done to them. The society recently started a series of “workshops” at Aarondale Residential home on Eastgate in Hornsea. The residents who took part certainly seemed to enjoy it and produced some commendable work which is now on display in the home. We hope this will become a regular event and we are indebted to Hornsea Lions, David Ward Motors, Hornsea Carpets and Imerys Roof Tiles for their generous sponsorship which has enabled  us to purchase a range of materials for use at these workshops. We are making every effort to work alongside other groups in the town, especially with this being City of Culture year. Members are being encouraged to attend events such as the Carnival, the Regatta and the Bike Fest with a view to producing work for an exhibition in December at the Seagull gallery. Six members will be present in the Artists in Residence marquee at the Carnival. On Friday 14 July, the Society holds its annual members’ night at the Catholic Church Hall starting at 7.30 pm. When there is a chance to see members at work on an informal basis and is an ideal opportunity to visit the society and see what goes on. We would like to extend an invitation to all the community to come along on the 14th, free of charge, to meet the members and get a taste of what we get up to. OPEN STUDIOS For the fourth consecutive year, we will be staging an Open Studios event in Hornsea and surrounding villages on the weekend of 29-30 July, from 10 am to 5 pm. A record number of 19 artists will be inviting the public to see them at work and  they are conveniently arranged at just 8 venues. A wide variety of work will be available to view and purchase: paintings, prints, cards, ceramics, sculpture etc. One of the venues will be the Seagull Gallery at the Indoor Bowls club in Hornsea where you can visit four local artists –Kate Gendle, Gill Sturt, Jane Topham and Phil White . They will be giving various demonstrations and you can also enjoy their exhibition at the gallery for the whole of July, entitled “Four Sight”. The gallery is sometimes closed in the afternoon during the summer so check opening times with the club on 537776.
