Friday 18 September saw the official opening of the new 3G All Weather Sports Pitch at Hornsea Secondary School with Hull City Ambassador Dean Windass cutting the ceremonial ribbon. School Head Stephen Lawrence addressed representatives from sponsor organisations, the councils, students and the Hornsea football teams before handing over to Dean. Mr Lawrence gave special thanks to Steve Ostler, Sally Richardson and Kelly Dowse – the three members of staff who had been most instrumental in turning the dream into the reality of a “truly fantastic facility”. He also thanked Dean for his very generous support of the Fell family with their fundraising efforts in memory of their late son Josh. Dean had a message for the youngsters present, reminding them how priveliged they are to have this facility and urging them to make the most of it to develop their skills. To celebrate the occasion 3 simultaneous matches took place: Hornsea Town Veterans v Hornsea 6th Form, Walking football between Hornsea Lions and Hornsea Town Ex’s and a mixed sex school match. The Lions were helped by a last minute signing who showed plenty of promise! The pitch has been very popular since opening in August, although some residents of College Gardens have been unhappy with the disturbances caused. The school has now introduced parking restrictions and other measures in an attempt to minimise these.
