Hornsea Cottage Hospital League of Friends
For some considerable time the League has been working hard behind the scenes with Humber Foundation Trust to bring clinics and services into the Cottage Hospital. It came as shock therefore, when the news broke that the Clinical Commissioning Group had a draft document for unplanned care which states that one of the options for making best use of their resources is the possible closure of Minor Injury Units which includes Hornsea.
This option will steer even more people towards an over stretched A&E department at Hull Royal Infirmary. Our community has a vast number of elderly people who decided this was a good place in which spend retirement, many of whom do not drive or have given up driving and now rely on public transport. We also have numerous school-age children and toddlers plus in the summer months our population swells significantly with holiday makers from all the caravan parks along the coast from Skipsea to Mappleton.
It is claimed that our M.I.U. is underused, which, if true, can only be because the CCG has not promoted the service adequately. However, the League has been doing their job for them by issuing posters and leaflets to various shops and organisations as to where you can go for treatment for any minor ailment or injury. The League would like to see proof of the footfall as our information suggests our unit is well used, when it is open and that recent closures due to sickness or holidays are totally unacceptable when no cover is provided.
The petition launched by the League of Friends on 2nd April has gathered momentum with many people sending me their experiences and messages of support via email or letter as well as signatures on the petition sheets which have reached 1,000 with many more still to be gathered in by the end of May.
The support of the people of Hornsea and District is overwhelming which shows just how important the M.I.U. is to all concerned. Sincere thanks to all who have shown support and signed the petition.
Just in case you are not sure of the opening times of the Minor Injury Unit cut out this item below and keep it in a safe place.
