Laugh Away the Winter Blues

The Laughing Gull comedy club at Floral Hall in Hornsea opened in May 2014 and is now running monthly throughout the year on the second Friday in each month.  The comedy night started out in the café but soon moved to a bigger and better space in the main hall with tables and chairs for all.

The format is three top National comedy acts per show, indeed the very funniest comedians you have never heard of!

Seats are dotted around tables in cabaret style, and there’s a bar to buy drinks in the intervals.  Do not worry about sitting at the front, because the acts will not pick on you, and they will not subject you to a stream of profanities: Laughing Gull is a non-swearing venue.  Also off the menu is racist, sexist, laddish and toilet humour: but be warned that hilarious is normal.

Most certainly on the menu is some food, namely hot pie and peas, served at around 8.35 pm, just after the opening comedy act.  There is a choice of pies, including vegetarian, plus the ubiquitous mushy peas!  This means you can have a complete night out and not have to worry about preparing an evening meal.

John Marshall, a Hornsea resident for the last three years, is both the booker of the comedians and the compere, performing as Agraman, the human anagram.  The veteran Agraman and his brand Buzz Comedy is widely known on the modern comedy circuit, having discovered both Peter Kay and Jason Manford, and giving early gigs to Lee Evans, Harry Hill, Alan Carr, Ross Noble, Dave Spikey, and John Bishop.

Friday 8th January

Headline comedian is Jamie Sutherland, a purveyor of typically hilarious Northern observational humour, and Wigan’s answer to Bolton’s Peter Kay.

First support act is Steve Day, Britain’s funniest deaf comedian, (if there is a funnier deaf comedian Steve has not heard!).

Second support act is Hull’s own Kevin Precious, now back to the area he grew up in, and bringing laughs with local references.
